What It Is
Panama's Digital Nomad Visa, formally the Short Stay Visa for Remote Workers, allows remote professionals earning a minimum of USD 3,000 per month from foreign sources to live legally in Panama for up to nine months, renewable once for a maximum stay of 18 months. It is a temporary residency permit, not a pathway to permanent residency in itself. But it is the ideal entry point for remote professionals who want to experience Panama's quality of life, establish their local infrastructure, and explore whether permanent residency suits them before committing to the full process.
Who Qualifies?
Any remote worker, freelancer, or online business owner earning a minimum of USD 36,000 per year from sources entirely outside Panama is eligible. There are no nationality restrictions. The income must come from foreign employers or foreign clients. Working for Panamanian companies or serving Panamanian clients is not permitted under this visa.
Family inclusion is available. Dependents can be included with a higher income threshold of USD 4,000 per month.
The Tax Advantage
Under Panama's territorial tax system, income earned from outside Panama is completely exempt from Panamanian income tax. Digital Nomad Visa holders who earn their income from foreign clients or employers pay zero Panamanian income tax on those earnings for the duration of their stay. US citizens remain subject to US federal tax obligations regardless of where they live. All other nationalities should consult a tax professional in their home country regarding their specific exit requirements.
