US Tax ID (EIN)
How to Obtain One Without an SSN or ITIN.
Your bank wants a tax identification number. The application for it wants a Social Security number you were never eligible for. That is where most international founders stop, and they should not. A separate filing route exists for foreign applicants, we use it as a matter of course, and it is the first thing we do in the engagement.
Why nothing moves without it.
An EIN is how the entity is identified to US institutions. Banks match it against your formation documents. Processors match it against the legal name you enter on the merchant application. A mismatch of a single word between the number and the state filing is one of the most common causes of an application stalling, and it is invisible to the applicant, who simply receives a decline with no stated reason.
What It Is
Narrow, specific, frequently misunderstood. An EIN identifies the entity. It does not by itself determine what you owe or where. It is an identification number issued by the US tax authority. It is what allows the entity to open accounts, be underwritten and be paid.
It is not a licence to operate, not a residency, not a visa, and not in itself a tax position. Your actual tax exposure depends on your structure, your residency and where the work is performed, which is a separate question and one we will address properly rather than in passing.
NoSSN or ITIN?
Where It Goes Wrong
The standard online application is closed to applicants without a US personal tax number. The alternative route is open, and it is the one we use. We prepare the filing, confirm that the entity name and the responsible party details match your formation documents exactly, submit it, and deliver the confirmation to you in writing.
Predictable, avoidable, expensive to repeat. Most failures trace to four causes, and all four are preventable at the drafting stage.
The entity name does not match the state filing exactly. The responsible party is named in a way the authority will not accept. The address is formatted in a way the processing system rejects. Or an applicant, hearing nothing, files a second application and creates a duplicate record that then has to be unwound before any bank will proceed. We file once, correctly, and we track it to issuance.
What this unlocks
The EIN is the first filing, not the objective. With it issued, the bank application can be submitted and merchant underwriting can begin.
We file it as the opening step of the engagement and carry the same file through to a live account. One conversation establishes what your structure needs and in what order.
